Chiang Rai is Thailand 's northern areas province and is bordered
by the neighbor states of Laos and Myanmar. The ancient city of Chiang
Rai was once the capital of the fabled Lanna Kingdom. It was founded
in 1262 by King Mengrai as he began to extend his domain southward.
According to legend the city was built on the spot where he found his favorite elephant.
